Rice Farming

A large part of Bali is covered with rice paddies. The hills are divided by small dikes in many terraces to hold the water in the field. Rice grains grow in the top of the plant, like wheat. When the plants are young, the paddy is completely under water. When harvest time approaches the farmers hang lots of flags to scare off the birds. Rice-growing knows no season, you see young and mature plants next to each other. The farmers harvest twice a year.

Where to go

There are several places to visit a rice farm, for instance around Ubud, or combined with a visit to Tanah Lot or the Bird Park. Take sturdy shoes, the dikes can be narrow and slippery.
