Batur Vulcano
In Central Bali you can visit Gunung Batur, the most active volcano on Bali.
The last major eruption was in 1917, taking more than 1.000 lives.
A much larger eruption in earlier ages created a huge crater 12 kilometers wide.
Within this crater a new volcano grows through constant lava eruptions.
The slopes are dark and bare in many places due to recent outbreaks.
You can climb the volcano or take a bath in the hot springs.
On the way
Prepare for a full day trip, as it is a two hour ride up from Kuta.
En route you may want to visit a well preserved hindu temple.
You can also visit a plantation on the slopes of the volcano.
Here the altitude is too high for rice fields, and farmers have switched to coffee, cacao and spices.
